THIS POSITION: ASSISTANT MECHANICAL FITTER

Johnson Asahi was established in 1995 and specialises in the production and export of livestock feed for the Asian and Middle East market.
The company sources hay from mainly local growers, tests and packs via bulk handling processes before arranging transport to Victorian ports from where it is shipped overseas.

Johnson Asahi are building a new facility in 2022/23 which will house new export hay processing machines to produce 200,000 metric tonnes per year. The new facility will require an additional 20 workers in the logistics, loader driver, plant operator, engineering, electrical, quality standards testing and management roles.

This SWL work experience placement provides students with an opportunity to see inside a modern production facility and to experience the many career options available.

Skills You Might Learn

This placement will provide students with valuable 'hands-on experience' and the opportunity to learn from experienced industry professionals.

Students will have the opportunity to attain a broad range of skills while on SWL placement. These skills include valuable general employability skills in communication, teamwork, problem solving, planning and technology.

Students may also attain vital industry specific skills which will relate to their studies including:
• Working in real-life scenarios and environments
• Working with tools and equipment necessary to the occupation and business
• Liaising and working with colleagues, supervisors, customers/clients and suppliers
• Occupational health and safety practices.

Typical Tasks & Duties


Assembly and Commissioning of new plant
Students will be assisting tradespeople with all aspects of the operation including reading engineering drawings, collecting materials for assembly, cleaning work spaces, operation of lathe and mill, testing pneumatic and hydraulic equipment, inspection and test machine operation, assembly and assisting with commissioning of new equipment during factory testing. All work will be under the supervision of qualified staff.

Maintenance Department:
Typical tasks and duties will include working safely alongside qualified staff who repair, maintain and modify hay baling equipment and other automotive vehicles and equipment. You will be observing and assisting with general engineering tasks, read and interpret sketches and drawings, prepare materials including cutting and welding. You will be required to use basic mechanical tools, assist with assembly work, and generally assist the team to keep the workshop, equipment and work area safe and clean.

Dress Requirements

Closed toe, nonslip shoes.
Steel capped safety boots.
Workwear appropriate for the workplace.
Neat casual attire
Minimal jewellery and long hair tied back for safety purposes.

Special Transport Requirements

No specific transport arrangements available. Students must organise their own transport, to and from the workplace.
