Skills You Might Learn

Some of the skills students will attain include: • Introductory level ability to recognise behavioural signs in dogs as well as knowledge of different breeds. • Communication; teamwork and ability to follow instructions • Interpersonal skills ,time management, and punctuality • Ability to work independently; solve problems; learn new skills • Will gain on-the-job experience

Typical Tasks & Duties

Some of the tasks that students would be required to undertake include: supervising and monitoring dogs to ensure their welfare and safety; playing with and entertaining the dogs to help them socialise in a positive way; reinforcing positive behaviours in them; cleaning up after the dogs including urine and faeces, sterilising toys, and cleaning and sterilising the pens. At time the physical demands of working in this environment can be high. Students need to be physically fit. They may be required to lift and carry dogs or separate dogs if needed. Other duties as directed by supervisor.

Student Requirements

A love of dogs and cats as well as an interest in animal welfare and behaviour. Willingness to learn new skills and ability to act quickly and take direction from more experienced staff. Students need to remain calm under pressure; work independently and in a team; ask questions and seek advice when needed.
