This placement could align with your Certificate II in Horticulture/Landscaping via the following Units of Competency:
AHCPCM201 Recognise plants

AHCPMG201 Treat weeds

Placements are available working outdoors as part of Citywide’s tree team in Pakenham and are 5 days long which can be extended if both parties agree. Students do not need to be studying a related VET certificate; however those studying Landscaping, Horticulture, Parks and Gardens shall be preferred.

For students with the right attitude and skills, these placements have the possibility of leading to full time apprenticeships, paid work, and supported career pathways through Citywide. Placements are viewed as a trial. A meet and greet prior to your placement is required.

Skills You Might Learn

Students participating in a placement at Citywide can expect to learn: planting and gardening, maintenance, teamwork, communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Safety focus – understanding Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS), what they are & why they exist
Pre-starts & equipment checking ready for work.
Working with team members on various tasks observing site work and assisting with various horticulture works such as line trimming, clearing, brush cutting, raking, weeding, garbage and debris removal, pruning, turf maintenance, planting, and watering.
There are no tasks allocated that require licences or permits for any placement students in this role.

Student Requirements

Students need to be able to make their own way for a 6:30am start to the Citywide Moorabbin Depot. Students will need a signed Travel and Accommodation form in case they are required to travel off site.

Students should have an interest in working in the Parks and Gardens space and need to have completed the relevant Safe@Work unit prior to placement (if they are not doing a relevant VET) as well as the Citywide Online Induction program.

They should also be enthusiastic, willing to learn, punctual, have appropriate presentation, and a polite manner.

Dress Requirements

Students should wear appropriate PPE equipment. Students will need their own boots, work pants/overalls. Top/jumper, gloves and safety glasses will be provided if the student doesn’t have their own.

Attendance: Standard working day is 6:30am to 2:30pm (7am - 3pm for the Bayside Trees team). Students need to be able to make their own way to the Citywide Depot located at 19 Sullivan St, Moorabbin before start time. Students will need a signed Travel and Accommodation form as you will be required to travel off site. For 1 day per week placements - placements should only be for a maximum of 5 weeks. A student can seek another 5 weeks (20 weeks maximum as per guidelines) should both the student and the employer agree after the commencement of the first placement.
