Assist the staff in this warm and friendly setting, as they provide care for those in need. Kilara House focus on providing a home-like environment, and offers supported accommodation to a range of age groups with varying care needs. This includes specialised care for mental health clients under the NDIS scheme. They offer long term care and respite care for residents including those recuperating from hospital stay or just simply not feeling well enough to do things themselves. Spend a week or two at Kilara, to gain a greater understanding of the support available to those with physical and/or mental health concerns.

Skills You Might Learn

Students may have the opportunity to develop skills in organising and completing daily activities, working with diverse people, following safe work practices for direct client care, interacting effectively with others, promoting and providing healthy food and drinks, responding to client needs, etc.

Work Related Skills which are vital in this workplace include Communication, Teamwork, Self Management, Planning and Organising, Initiative and Enterprise.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Placement students will assist staff with meal preparation, service and clean up, lifestyle and entertainment activities (including some walks offsite), assisting residents to move between rooms. There may be opportunity to assist with putting clothing on or off (outer layers only), in order to gain understanding of movement and restrictions. Students will NOT assist with medications, toileting or showering.

Student Requirements

Best suited to students undertaking Community Services, Allied Health, Individual Support or other aligned VET.
Students should demonstrate a genuine interest in the care industry, including an interest in supporting mental health clients and programs.
Students must be clean, neat, tidy, punctual, and demonstrate respectful language and manner towards residents, visitors and other staff.
Provide customer service to residents and their families and visitors by being polite and courteous at all times.

Dress Requirements

For safety and comfort reasons, students should wear closed toed shoes, dark coloured pants, minimal discreet jewellery (no rings, no dangling necklaces, earrings should be studs or sleepers) long hair tied back. To be discussed further at interview.

Special Transport Requirements

Venue is close to bus access, and easy walk to train station. No Travel Form required for this placement. Students will accompany clients on walking excursions.
