Second Chance Animal Rescue

Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) is a not-for-profit organisation that re homes dogs and cats. Students will be working with a small team of dedicated staff and a number of other volunteers who all have a passion for animal welfare. You will learn a wide variety of skills while taking care of dogs and cats. These include feeding, watering, grooming, bathing, exercising animals, and clean, disinfect, and repair their cages., In addition, students may be involved in fund-raising, being a SCAR ambassador to promote the work of SCAR, including how animals are rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed, and engage with the community through volunteering, arts and crafts and helping repair fences. Students who are interested in gaining a placement must email a brief cover letter to Holy explaining why they want to do a placement with SCAR and their resume

Skills You Might Learn

Animal handling skills and observation of health / behavior of animals. Understanding of how to minimize the spread of disease through proper handling and disinfecting.

Being involved in fund-raising will help students to develop their interpersonal skills and resilience. It will also help them become adaptable, enhance their ability to tell compelling stories and research donors in-depth.

As an ambassador for SCAR, students will have the opportunity to help raise brand awareness, promote products or services in-store to implementing marketing campaigns.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students will assist SCAR volunteers with animal handling, sanitation, keeping pets clean, fed and comfortable during their time at the shelter. They will also be involved in stock management, customer service and client liaison. Another exciting area will be in assisting to promote the needs of these animals to the community and talking their attributes to potential pet hosts in the community.

Other tasks will include assisting SCAR staff and volunteers with taking a dog for a walk and / or yard play. Cleaning cat rooms, learning and completing observations, general cleaning including vacuuming, mopping, dusting, dishes, laundry.

Participating in fund-raising may involve researching potential sponsors, organising and participating in fund-raising events, maintaining records of sponsors, organising campaigns that will lead to donations

Student Requirements

The students are expected to:

- Be interested in working with animals
- Attend an information session
- Have the ability to follow strict instruction
- Have the ability to follow policies and procedures
- Provide regular feedback regarding performance
- Complete the Fear Free Shelter Programme (free of charge)
- Be reliable & punctual
- Be able to communicate clearly
- Have the ability or willingness to learn about animal body language

As a fundraiser students will need to be good listeners, able to motivate people, be hard-working and love the work. Have high energy and care for people and animals.

Dress Requirements

- Long trousers or jeans
- Non-slip, closed toe shoes, preferably boots or sneakers
- Sleeved t-shirts
- Jumpers & jackets as required.
