AVAILABLE IN 2021 - Karingal St Laurence (KSL) is a not-for-profit organisation which was established to improve the quality of life for people with a disability by providing and promoting valued services, care and supports in personal development, education programs in vocational placement, training and support services, accommodation and associated support services and aged care and related services.
KSL help people with a disability achieve social and economic inclusion within the Colac community. Their key support services include accommodation and tenancy support, counselling, employment pathways, life transition planning, numeracy and litracy skill development, occupational therapy, parenting training and transition from school to further education.
KSL oversee 4 business's providing employment in a supported environment, these include Kui Nursery, The Otway Kitchen, Otway Property Services and The Botanic Cafe.

Skills You Might Learn

In this placement students will work to maintain an environment to empower people of all abilities. Support community participation and inclusion. Contribute to skill development and maintenance. Participate in the implementation of individual plans. Support individual and emotional wellbeing. Follow all safety procedures.
KSL oversees a variety of businesses providing supported employment for their clients. Students applying for a placement may have the opportunity to explore the various businesses. These include hospitality at The Otway Kitchen or Botanic Cafe, Garden and Building maintenance with Otway Property Services or general help with Specialist Support Services.

Typical Tasks & Duties

Students will learn to work effectively with people of all abilities to enhance access to community participation and skill building. Workers in this area carry out activities under the direct supervision to maintain personal care and other activities of living for people with a disability in the community and activity centres and businesses. Students will assist workers to carry out activities related to an individualised plan for each participant. The main aim is to help individuals and provide opportunities to access relevant and available services and employment within the broad community.

Student Requirements

Understanding confidentiality requirements is crucial to gaining a placement in this work place. To apply for this placement the student must present a resume and a cover letter explaining why they are interested in working in the disability sector. To work in this industry students need to be patient, flexible and understanding. They need to have a supportive and caring nature. They must have a commitment to the rights of people with all abilities to live dignified lives. There must be respect at all times for participant dignity and privacy. There must be good communication skills and an ability to work as a team. Students must be able to cope with the physical and emotional demands of the job and be able to perform domestic duties efficiently.

Dress Requirements

Neat tidy dress with covered in shoes is required. If working with the gardening team safety boots will be required.

Special Transport Requirements

The student must organise their own transport too and from the placement.
